The Perfect Crossover: Evergoods Civic Half Zip (CHZ22) – Outdoor Durability Meets City Sleekness

Introduction: The Backpack That Bridges Two Worlds

Most backpacks force you to choose: outdoor durability or city sleekness? Hiking packs are tough but look out of place in offices. Urban packs look professional but fall apart on trails. The Evergoods Civic Half Zip (CHZ22) refuses this compromise—it’s a genuine crossover backpack that performs equally well in wilderness and workplace.

Evergoods was founded by former Patagonia and GoRuck designers who wanted to create the ultimate hybrid backpack. The CHZ22 (Civic Half Zip 22-liter) is their most popular offering, and after a month of testing in both urban and outdoor environments, I understand why.

In this comprehensive review, we’ll explore how the Evergoods CHZ22 achieves this rare balance—and whether it’s the right backpack for your dual-life needs.

Design Philosophy: Purpose-Built from Experience

The Evergoods team has decades of combined experience designing backpacks for Patagonia (outdoor expertise) and GoRuck (military-grade durability). The CHZ22 represents their best ideas distilled into a single, elegant package.

The design philosophy is simple: eliminate everything unnecessary, perfect everything essential. There are no extraneous pockets, no gimmicky features, no over-engineered organization. Every element serves a clear purpose.

The result is a backpack that looks clean and simple but reveals its thoughtful design the more you use it. This is the kind of bag that grows on you—features you didn’t notice at first become indispensable after a few weeks.

The CHZ22 name tells you everything: C for Civic (city-focused), HZ for Half Zip (the distinctive closure system), and 22 for 22-liter capacity. It’s a bag designed for people who live active, hybrid lifestyles—commuting to work, hiking on weekends, traveling spontaneously.

Material Science: Built for Abuse

The Evergoods CHZ22 uses 840D ballistic nylon on high-wear areas (bottom, back panel) and 400D high-tenacity nylon on the main body. This combination balances durability and weight.

The 840D ballistic nylon is nearly indestructible—the same material used on the Timbuk2 Authority. The 400D main body is lighter but still highly abrasion-resistant, comparable to what you’d find on premium hiking packs.

All fabrics are coated with a DWR (durable water-repellent) finish. In testing, water beaded up and rolled off effectively. The bag survived 20 minutes of moderate rain with no interior moisture—not bad for a backpack without a dedicated rain cover.

The zippers are custom YK, weather-resistant, and feature oversized pulls that are easy to grab with gloves or cold hands. The hardware is Duraflex, and every stress point is reinforced with bar-tacking (extra stitching).

One unique feature: the bottom panel is fully lined with high-density foam. This does two things: it protects your gear when you set the bag down on rough surfaces, and it helps the bag stand upright on its own. The CHZ22 is one of the few backpacks that reliably stands up without leaning against something.

The Half-Zip Design: Genius or Frustrating?

The “half-zip” in CHZ22 refers to the main compartment closure—a single zipper that extends from the top center down both sides, creating a deep opening that doesn’t go all the way to the bottom.

This design has passionate defenders and critics. Let me explain both perspectives.

Why it’s genius: The half-zip creates a natural “bucket” shape that’s easy to pack and unpack. Unlike clamshell designs (where the bag splits completely open), the half-zip maintains structure even when open. You can see everything inside without items spilling out. The deep opening also makes it easy to access items at the bottom without removing everything on top.

Why it’s frustrating: You can’t lay the bag completely flat like a suitcase. If you’re a meticulous packer who likes everything spread out, this might bother you. The half-zip also means the top of the bag is the only access point—no side zippers or separate compartments.

After a month of use, I came down firmly in the “genius” camp. The half-zip is faster to use than clamshell designs and provides better visibility than top-loaders. It’s a genuinely innovative solution to a problem most backpack designers don’t even think about.

How to Pack the CHZ22 Effectively

The half-zip design works best when you adopt a specific packing strategy:

  • Heavy items at the bottom (laptop, books, tech pouch)
  • Soft items in the middle (clothing, jacket)
  • Quick-access items at the top (snacks, gloves, hat)

This creates a stable, well-balanced load that’s easy to access from the half-zip opening. Once you develop this habit, the CHZ22 becomes incredibly intuitive to use.

Organization: Minimalist but Effective

The Evergoods CHZ22 takes a minimalist approach to organization—fewer pockets than many competitors, but each pocket is thoughtfully designed.

Laptop Compartment: Separate and Secure

The rear laptop compartment is accessible via a separate zipper on the back panel. This is a fully independent compartment, meaning you can access your laptop without opening the main half-zip.

The sleeve is suspended (false bottom) and padded on all sides. It fits laptops up to 16 inches comfortably, including large MacBook Pros. The padding is thick enough for drop protection but flexible enough not to add bulk.

A second sleeve sits in front of the laptop sleeve, perfect for a tablet or documents.

Main Compartment: The Deep Bucket

The main compartment is essentially a single deep bucket with minimal internal organization:

  • Two mesh zippered pockets on the inside front panel
  • A key clip at the top
  • Otherwise open space

This minimal internal organization is intentional. Evergoods assumes you’ll use pouches and organizers for small items, leaving the main compartment flexible for whatever you need to carry. For some users, this is liberating. For others, it’s frustrating.

During testing, I used a small tech pouch for cables and chargers, a packing cube for clothes, and a separate toiletry kit. This modular approach worked well—I could reconfigure the bag instantly for different uses.

Front Quick-Access Pocket

A single quick-access pocket sits on the front of the bag. It’s vertically oriented and secured with a weather-resistant zipper.

Inside, you’ll find:

  • A key leash
  • Organization slots for pens and small items
  • A zippered mesh pocket

The pocket is large enough for a small notebook, phone, wallet, keys, and a few other essentials. It’s not as elaborate as the admin panels on dedicated commuter backpacks, but it’s sufficient for most users.

External Water Bottle Pockets

The CHZ22 features two deep water bottle pockets on the sides. Unlike many backpacks where water bottle pockets are an afterthought, Evergoods designed these to be genuinely useful.

The pockets are made of stretchy fabric that expands to fit bottles up to 32 oz. They’re also angled to prevent bottles from falling out when the bag is tipped over. During testing, I carried a Nalgene 32 oz bottle and a Hydro Flask—both stayed secure even during a trail run.

The pockets are also positioned so they don’t intrude into the main compartment. Even with large bottles, the internal space remains usable.

Comfort and Ergonomics: Outdoor-Grade Comfort

This is where the Evergoods CHZ22 truly shines. Most city backpacks are comfortable for short walks from train to office. The CHZ22 is comfortable for all-day hiking.

Shoulder Straps: Breathable and Contoured

The shoulder straps are made of breathable mesh foam and contoured to follow your shoulders’ natural curve. They’re wider than typical commuter backpack straps, distributing weight more effectively across your chest.

The straps also feature load lifters—adjustable straps at the top that pull the bag closer to your body. Load lifters are common on hiking backpacks but rare on urban packs. They make a noticeable difference in comfort, especially with heavier loads.

A removable sternum strap helps stabilize the bag. The strap includes an elastic section that allows natural chest expansion while breathing—a thoughtful detail for active use.

Back Panel: The “Civic” Suspension System

Evergoods developed a proprietary back panel they call the “Civic Suspension System.” It features:

  • Thick foam padding with airflow channels
  • Lumbar support that sits in the natural curve of your lower back
  • A rigid framesheet that transfers weight to your hips

The result is exceptional comfort. During a 5-mile hike with a 15-pound load, the CHZ22 felt as comfortable as dedicated hiking packs. During daily commutes, I often forgot I was wearing it. This back panel alone justifies the premium price.

Real-World Testing: City and Trail

I tested the Evergoods CHZ22 in both urban and outdoor environments to evaluate its crossover credentials.

City Commuting (2 weeks)

Daily load: laptop, tech pouch, lunch, jacket, water bottle. Performance: excellent. The backpack looks professional (especially in black), fits under train seats, and provides quick access to essentials via the front pocket. The half-zip made it easy to grab my jacket without unpacking everything.

The only urban weakness: the minimal internal organization meant I needed pouches for small items. If you prefer built-in organization, the Aer or Bellroy might suit you better.
